Driving for Uber is looking mighty appealing and that vacation you’ve been saving up for could become a reality much sooner.

There are a few regulations in place for Canadian Uber drivers. Each of the 3 provinces has their own requirements for driving with a rideshare platform. We’ll take you through each of the provinces major cities.

Uber Driver and Vehicle Requirements

Let’s break down the basics using each provinces major city.

Calgary, Alberta

Driver Requirements

  • 21 years old and over
  • Class 1,2 or 4 drivers license
  • Proof that you can work in Canada (Passport, Birth Certificate, Citizenship card, Work Permit)
  • Background screening

Vehicle Requirements

Insurance

Drivers are required to maintain their own personal insurance coverage. This is in addition to the insurance plan provided by Uber through Intact Insurance. Your name must be in the pink insurance slip. If you are the secondary driver of the vehicle, you must provide proof of an insurance policy with your name on it.

Toronto, Ontario

In 2016 Toronto introduced new bylaws which set specific requirements for driving for Uber. The new bylaws state that Uber drivers must have $2 million in liability coverage and provide a background check to the city.

Driver Requirements

  • 21 years old
  • Ontario G driver’s license (must be Ontario)
  • Proof that you can work in Canada (Passport, Birth Certificate, Citizenship card, Work Permit)
  • Have PTC (Private Transportation Company) License.
  • Background check

Vehicle Requirements

  • Year 2009 and newer for GTA
  • Year 2012 and newer for Toronto and Mississauga
  • Registration must be in your name
  • Upload a Safety Standards Certificate from an MTO Authorized mechanic
  • 4 door vehicle
  • Good condition vehicle with no visible damage
  • No commercial branding
  • No rebuilt or salvaged vehicles
  • Must have snow tires on all 4 wheels between Dec 1st and April 30th
  • Uber sticker must be displayed in the back windshield on the passenger side

Insurance

All Uber rides are covered by insurance from Intact, however, driver’s are also required to have their own personal insurance coverage.

Montreal, Quebec

Quebec has been pretty tough on Uber since they launched as a 2014 pilot project in Montreal. The province has set regulations that require Uber drivers to undergo 35 hours of training, on par with their taxi driver colleagues.

Driver Requirements

  • 21 years old
  • Class 4C Quebec Driver’s Licence. Probationary or restricted licences are not accepted.
  • Proof that you can work in Canada (Passport, Birth Certificate, Citizenship card, Work Permit)
  • All Uber Partners must have GST-QST numbers to drive on the platform.
  • Understand and speak basic French.
  • Background screening
  • Criminal Screening
  • Driver Record from SAAQ
  • The Uber sticker must be displayed on the bottom right side of the rear windshield
  • Montreal Uber drivers will require in person training

Vehicle Requirements

  • 2008 model or more recent
  • Registered in the province of Quebec
  • 4-door vehicle
  • A solid roof
  • Maximum of 350,000 km
  • Good interior and exterior condition
  • No salvaged or rebuilt vehicles

Insurance

Quebec drivers are also covered by an insurance plan through Intact (MontrealQuebec CityGatineau).  Partners must also have their own personal insurance coverage. If you are not the owner of the vehicle you must provide proof of insurance with your name on it.
