PTC License for Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton and Oakville
A PTC License is essentially just authorization from the City that you meet the by-law requirements. Don’t worry, there aren’t any extra steps you have to do if you meet the requirements we have laid out and follow the sign up process. Uber does all that work for you. Some of these cities don’t actually assign the driver a PTC license, they just regulate Uber with restrictions and conditions drivers need to meet.
There are a couple of things you need to know though when you start driving. The first is to make sure that your Uber decal is always on your back windshield (passenger) side. In addition to having the usual documents you need to carry when you drive like your insurance, registration and driver’s license, you also need to have your Safety Standards Certificate and your D29 license number which can be found in the app.
Once a year or after 40,000 km after your last vehicle inspection, you need to get a new Safety Standard Certificate. Uber will usually notify you in advance of the 1 year mark. You will also need to get a new background check annually too. Also, make sure those winters tires are on from December 1 to April 30.
By-law officers will actually request an Uber and when you arrive for the pick-up you will be subjected to a mandatory inspection, checking all of the things listed above. If you are missing anything you will get an expensive ticket and may have your Uber account suspended.
If you live anywhere else in the GTA you can still drop off people in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton and Oakville, you just can’t pick anyone up.
Learn the rules when your picking up and dropping off passengers at the airport to avoid big fines!
Uber Driver HST & Taxes
As an Uber driver, you are not an employee but are self-employed contracting with Uber. This means that you are responsible for remitting your own taxes and keep track of your expenses, just like an other business owner.
The taxes you will have to pay include CPP (Canadian Pension Plan contributions), Employment Insurance (optional), Federal and Provincial Income tax. You should consult with an accountant who can tell you how much to save from your earnings, especially if you have another job.
HST will also be charged to the customer and passed on to you. That means that you will need keep it to pay the government. You will need to get an HST number from the CRA in order to remit the 13%.
We know this can be a bit confusing when you are starting out. That is why we have developed a three-part tax guide to answer all your questions as well as a primer on the difference between Uber and Lyft when it comes to taxes.
Insurance Requirements
Uber drivers in Ontario are automatically insured through Intact Insurance. Links to policy information can be found here.
Commercial driver insurance is not required for most services except Uber Black and Uber Black SUV. However, you should check with your personal insurance provider to make sure you are covered while operating as a rideshare driver. Most of them will add an endorsement to your policy for a small rate increase.
Now that you are now using your vehicle for business you are obligated to disclose that to your insurer. Failure to do so may result in coverage being denied to you even if you are in an accident and not driving Uber or possible cancellation of your policy.
