Guide to Become an UberEATS Driver in Montreal

UberEATS connects hungry customers with restaurants to deliver them food straight to their door. Your job as a driver is go online with the Uber Driver Smartphone app and wait for an order.

Once you receive a “ping”, you can choose to accept or decline the order. You will then drive to the restaurant, grab the food and drop it off at the customer’s address. It’s as simple as that.

Let’s show you what the rates and requirements are for an UberEATS driver in Montreal and how to get started!

Ways to Deliver

You can deliver UberEATS with a bicycle, scooter or car.

Rates

You are paid a flat rate for picking up and dropping off orders, as well as a fee per kilometre. The Uber Fee, or Commission, is 35% and is taken off your fare.

During peak times Uber may offer a pay “boost”. This is where UberEATS uses a multiplier to increase your earnings. If an in-demand delivery area advertises a multiplier, ex: 1.8, then your fare is multiplied by 1.8 and increased by 80%. The Uber commission is only applied to your fare, not the boost.

You can accept tips in cash or customers have the option to tip you in the app after the delivery is made.

Tips

How does the pay work as an UberEATS Driver?

Let’s Do an Example: You pick up an order and delivery it 3.8 km away from the restaurant to the customer. The boost at the time you pick up the order is 1.8 and the customer tips you $2.00. You would make…

Step 1 (Fare): $2.60 + $1.20 + ($0.85 x 3.8) = $7.03
Step 2 (Commission): $7.03 x 0.35 = $2.46
Step 3 (Net Fare): $7.03 – $2.46 = $4.57
Step 4 (Boost): $7.03 x 0.8 = $5.62
Step 5 (Total Pay): $4.57 + $5.62 + $2.00 = $12.19

UberX vs UberEATS Pay

If you drive UberX or another service type transporting passengers, you can also get UberEATS delivery requests. You can select the types of requests under Preferences in the app.

If you drive UberX as well as UberEATS, the commission rate Uber takes is 25% vs 35% if you only have an UberEATS account. However, the boosts offered to UberX drivers for UberEATS orders is much lower. Some drivers that do both feel the better boosts make it worth setting up two accounts, one for UberX trips only and one for UberEATS only.

How much will I make per hour?

Estimates are between $18-$25/hour, depending on demand, area, boosts, tips day and time. Some drivers have reported earnings up to $55/hour!

How do multiple orders work?

Pick up: Sometimes you will pick up more than one order at the same time from the same restaurant but you will only be paid one pickup fee.

Per km: You will be paid for the most efficient route to each destination, as calculated by Uber.

Drop Off: If you have multiple orders with different drop off locations, you will get paid for each drop off.

You should consult with an accountant who can tell you how much to save from your earnings, especially if you have another job.

You will NOT require a GST/HST or QST number. UberEATS will collect all required taxes from the customer and remit it directly to the government. If you drive for a living you may want to consult an accountant regarding possible registration. Once you pass a certain amount of income as an independent contractor, you may have to charge and remit GST/HST Number. Tax rules change frequently so get some help!

Insurance Requirements

Uber claims that they offer commercial insurance for you only when you are on your way to a restaurant for a pickup and delivering to the customer.

You are also required to maintain your own personal insurance policy.

Most insurance companies require you to disclose to them you are using your vehicle for commercial purposes. Before you start driving, you should talk with your insurance company or agent for more information.

FAQ

Do I need an insulated delivery bag?

UberEATS drivers have inconsistent reports about this. Some people report that they receive a bag delivered to their home and their driver account is charged $15, which is taken off your first pay. Others have reported that after you sign up you will be directed to their supplier where you can buy a bag for approximately $11.25 including shipping. It is important to note, some restaurants may not allow you to pickup an order without a bag, particularly when delivering pizzas. Either way, the cost is pretty low.

For cyclists, you can order one from Uber for $40 to be shipped to your house and they will take the fee off your first pay. If available in your city at the time, all this information should be provided during your signup process.

Do I need to sign for shifts?

No need to sign up for shifts. Just log on and accept “Pings”, which are on-demand requests for deliveries. Accept or decline requests and log off whenever you want! Uber states you must keep a satisfactory acceptance rate or you will be deactivate but there are conflicting reports about this actually happening.

Are there a minimum number of deliveries I need to do to stay active on the platform?

No, but if your documents expire you will need to upload them again before you can start driving.

Is there an orientation, interview or “onboarding” session?

No, everything is done online or you can you go the Greenlight Hub closest to you to sign up or get help if you need it!
