How to Drive Uber Eats: Requirements

If you are interested in driving for Uber Eats in Canada, you can check out our rates and requirements page for detailed information on your city.

Some cities are new to Uber Eats and have not released their rates or any city specific criteria, so we have included the general requirements here. Don’t worry, we will have all the details for your city coming soon!

Personal Requirements for Uber Eats Drivers

You must meet some individual requirements to drive for Uber Eats.:

  • Be 21 years old or older if driving
  • Meet the age of majority, 18 or 19 depending on the province, if you are cycling
  • You must have valid government issued photo ID if you don’t have a driver’s licence and are a cyclist

Vehicle Requirements for Uber Eats Drivers

The vehicle requirements are relatively easy for Uber Eats drivers. They are much less strict than driving for UberX, where you have passengers in the car. The only requirements for Uber Eats drivers in most cities are:

  • You must have a 2 or 4 door car made after 1998
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Proof of valid insurance

How Do I Sign Up for Uber Eats?

Gather all your documents together and sign up online.

Sign-up Bonuses

In many new markets, you will be guaranteed between $150 – $165 if you complete 30 deliveries within 90 days of signing up. This means that if you only make $120 for example, Uber Eats will add the difference of an additional $30-$45 to your pay.

There are sometimes additional sign-up bonuses that get added to your pay, depending on your city.

Be Your Own Boss

The nice thing about driving for Uber Eats is that you are your own boss. You are not an employee of Uber but an independent contractor working with the company. You can sign on to the app whenever you want, do a couple trips and sign off. There are no minimum shifts, work hours or obligations to work at all really.

Taxes

As your own boss, this means that you actually own your own business. You will be able to deduct expenses like gas from your earned income but it also means you have a lot more paperwork to do. It also means income tax isn’t taken off of your pay cheque, so you will have to remit that yourself.

We have complied a list of tax articles to help you out:

Though they are centered around Uber’s passenger transportation service, most of the content except sales tax applies to Uber Eats drivers too. Unless you make over 30K as an Uber Eats driver, you don’t need to worry about sales tax.
